Oceans and Seas

     Japan is surrounded by many bodies of water. These are the Sea of Japan, the Pacific Ocean, the East China Sea, the Sea of Okhjotsk, and the Philippine Sea. They were important because they were a big source of food (fish) and were often used for transportation. The East China Sea's seaports led to the Chinese invasion of the Vietnamese kingdoms.

Major Locations

     One important city today was once called Edo. Today, it is called... Tokyo. It was the birthplace to a famous haiku writer, Basho. Edo was the capital of Japan during Tokugawa and his descendants' rules, from the year 1603 to 1868. Tokyo is still Japan's capital today.

     Mt. Fuji is important in culture and is one of the most honored land features. It is also the tallest mountain in Japan. 
     Some of the larger islands of Japan are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku, and Okinawa. These islands are vital, as they were the homes of people in the past and today.
     The Korea Strait was a place where ideas and goods could spread by sea from Korea to Japan. Many ideas and other things were spread during the long, rich history of Japan.
